In April 2009, the City of Toronto upgraded their Police Services garage facility with a 50 kW grid-tied photovoltaic system supplied and installed by Carmanah Technologies. The solar power installation assists the Toronto Police Services in their efforts to control energy costs, while reducing its reliance on the Toronto Hydro distribution system.

The project also features a web-based performance monitoring system that tracks system status, power production and environmental variables ensuring optimal operation. Following structural upgrades to strengthen existing rooftop supports, the integrated solar power system delivers immediate benefits in the form of reduced energy consumption, lower monthly electricity bills, and ongoing revenue generation through contract-based incentives such as the Ontario Power Authority Feed-In-Tariff (FIT) program.

The system’s rooftop array also serves as a visible symbol of the City of Toronto’s commitment to a sustainable future powered by clean and efficient renewable energy technology.
