Carmanah installed a 71 kW grid-tied photovoltaic system on the roof of the new Skills Training Center at Durham College in April 2009. Designed to supplement the campus’s primary utility feed, the grid-tie photovoltaic system will also provide students the opportunity to combine theory and practice and gain exposure to installed photovoltaic equipment. Students are able to see PV modules on the roof, electrical equipment through a glass wall in the classrooms and monitor the system’s performance on Durham College’s online Solar Portal.
The solar power system is part of a 40,000-square-foot expansion and upgrade of the college’s Whitby campus. The grid-tie photovoltaic system from Carmanah Technologies is supplied by Osso Electric Supplies (a division of Sonepar Canada Inc.) and installed by Space Age Electric (Oshawa) Ltd.
