Carmanah supplied a 108 kW solar power system to the Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGS) building in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The custom designed turnkey system installed on the roof of the Jean Canfield Building was the largest grid-tie solar power system in Canada to date (in 2007). This installation makes the Jean Canfield Building one of the most environmentally friendly buildings in Canada.

The Jean Canfield Building is located on University Avenue, bordering on Fitzroy and Euston Streets in downtown Charlottetown. The four-storey building maintains the historical architectural style of downtown Charlottetown, and has become a national showcase for sustainable and green design.

PWGSC’s goal was to achieve Gold certification for the Jean Canfield building under the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System - the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. Carmanah's design and renewable energy solutions helped the project developer reach these levels of sustainability. LEED-certified buildings, with the use of today’s sustainable energy technologies, can help reduce fossil fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions.

Carmanah's state-of-the-art 108 kW grid-tie solar power system, which includes more than 500 Sanyo solar modules, is connected to the electrical grid and also includes web-based monitoring technology that provides live content to a lobby display, enabling visitors to view the system's energy generation performance in real time.

This project was the recipient of the 2008 Canadian Solar Industries Association Solar PV Project of the Year award.
