Calgary’s first commercial grid tied solar system was installed at British House, a new facility at the Spruce Meadows Equestrian Centre. This project was completed in partnership with BP Canada Energy Company, the local utility Atco Electric, and Spruce Meadows.

British House is a new luxury multi-purpose facility, which houses boardrooms, skyboxes and an elegant patio. The design of all sections of British House feature a spectacular view of the exhibition grounds and the surrounding geography.

The 2.5 kW installation, supplied by Carmanah is a battery-less, utility grid-dependent system that feeds solar generated electricity directly into the provincial powergrid. The system features 40 BP solar modules supplying DC power to a Xantrex Sun Tie inverter which feeds AC electricity directly to the site’s existing electrical panel.

All regulatory concerns regarding safety have been met for this installation. Should the utilty supplied power fail for any reason, the inverter shuts down automatically, preventing solar generated power from feeding back into the grid.

The solar modules blend easily into the facade of the building, indicative of the industry trend which sees solar cells being incorporated into buildings as architectural features, both at the time of building design and as retrofits to reduce a building’s environmental impact.
