Earlier this year, 10 cities across the US stepped up to join the Vision Zero Focus Cities program, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries through initiatives including enforcement, education, and smarter street design.

The cities involved in the program are developing and sharing best practices to create a prototype to be used in other communities for the safety of all road users.

Participating cities:

Austin, TX
Boston, MA
Chicago, IL
Fort Lauderdale, FL
Los Angeles, CA
New York City, NY
Portland, OR
San Francisco, CA
Seattle, WA
Washington, DC

With additional cities across the US considering following suit and taking part in Vision Zero, opportunities could arise to include solar-powered beacons in their community plans and strategies.

For example, the state of North Carolina recently announced their commitment to a Vision Zero initiative in order to help reduce traffic deaths, which numbered 1,387 people in 2015. Over the next 15 years, the state hopes to cut its traffic fatalities and serious injuries in half; the long-term target is zero deaths.
