Carmanah is currently testing 20 units of the Carmanah Model 702 for runway edge lighting, taxiway edge lighting and apron edge lighting at Yellowknife Airport in the North West Territories, Canada.
Yellowknife airport is located at 62° Northern latitude with winter temperatures range between -30°C to -44°C (-22°F to -47.2°F). Carmanah Lights are designed to operate in temperatures between -40°C and +80°C (-40°F to 176°F) in virtually all solar conditions worldwide. See technology overview for more details.
"The purpose of this runway edge light beta test is to determine if Carmanah Lights can withstand the harsh environmental conditions of extreme cold and low solar/light conditions throughout the long winters. Currently, Carmanah Lights are performing extremely well. The ultimate objective is to have more of these units installed at three more Northern airports that do not have conventional powered lighting."
Electric rates in the North West Territories currently run as high as $2.00 per kilowatt/hour. The cost savings of Carmanah lights in this instance are simply overwhelming compared to conventional electrical lighting systems.
