The City of Tacoma, Washington has recently installed Carmanah's Model R829 solar LED school zone flasher. As a first for Tacoma, the flashing beacons have been installed in a school zone where speeding has been a problem. Since the installation, vehicle speeds have reduced and driver awareness of the school zone has improved.
The school zone flashers have been user-programmed to operate only during times when children are coming to or leaving from school. The flashing sequence, which comes on three times during the day for 15-45 minutes, is pre-programmed for 500 days in advance. Modifications to the schedule can be easily made at any time via Carmanah's user-friendly PC-based scheduling software.
By selecting Carmanah's solar-powered LED solution, Tacoma simplified the installation (as no hardwired connections were required) and saved significant costs in terms of labour, maintenance and energy bills. Being in the Pacific Northwest, which is one of the most challenging regions for solar products in North America, Tacoma wanted a technology that was reliable. With more than 100,000 installations in 110 countries, Carmanah's technology has been thoroughly proven to operate reliably, even in some of the world's most extreme conditions.
