Carmanah Provides Additional Stand-Alone Solar Power Units to US Army Base in Kuwait

Wednesday, June 13, 2007

Carmanah's Power Systems Group has received an additional order for 72 units of its fully integrated stand-alone solar power systems to be installed at the US Army Base, Camp Arifjan, in Kuwait. This order follows an original order of 39 units that were installed at the US Army Base over the last two months. These systems are currently being used by a defense contractor to power radio-frequency identification (RFID) readers to track inventory at the base.

Camp Arifjan, a new $200 million state-of-the-art facility built courtesy of the Kuwaiti government, was designed to accommodate equipment sets that could be stored in large warehouses to protect them from the harsh desert environment. Inventory control is conducted through RFID readers, an automatic identification method that relies on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponders.

These RFID readers have become an essential part of modern military supply chain operations. Because of the sensitivity of the equipment, these readers require a reliable and continuous source of power; as alternative to securing power from the local utility company, the customer contacted Carmanah to explore the option of equipping the facility with a solar power system. Carmanah's stand-alone solar power systems were chosen for their ease of installation, reliability and durability in remote locations.

About Carmanah's stand-alone solar power systems

Carmanah's solar power systems are integrated, turnkey power sources, specifically designed for remote industrial applications. They are the only solar power systems available with certification for Class I, DIV. II hazardous locations. In addition to powering the RFID readers, stand-alone solar power systems are an ideal, reliable remote power solution for applications such as:

  • Video surveillance
  • Homeland security
  • Pipeline monitors
  • Security lighting
  • Remote communications
  • Perimeter security
  • Water resource security
  • Construction sites
  • Motion sensing
  • Emergency calls

Thousands of Carmanah's solar power systems have been deployed worldwide over the past 15 years. Field proven to endure the extremely harsh environments found at many remote locations, Carmanah solar power systems are shipped as complete, easy-to-assemble kits that can be installed quickly with minimal technical expertise.
