Carmanah's Solar Power Systems Group has received an order from the City of North Bay for a turnkey 10kW grid tie solar power system. The solar power demonstration project will be installed on the roof of the mezzanine of North Bay City Hall, as part of an initiative to reduce the City's environmental footprint and to engage the community to reduce its impact on global warming. The project is a joint venture between the city and North Bay Hydro. The installation, which features an array of SHARP 175 watt solar modules, is expected to be completed by April 30, 2008 and will feature a web-based data acquisition system which will report real-time renewable energy production from the site. The City of North Bay plans to obtain a RESOP (Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program) contract that will enable it to sell the solar power to North Bay Hydro over a 20 year period at a rate of $0.42 per kWh.
Carmanah was selected to design, project manage and install the solar power system at North Bay City Hall because of its reputation and ability to deliver high-quality, large-scale commercial grid tie solar-power systems in Canada.
About Carmanah's Grid Tie Solar Power Systems
When connected to the electrical grid, a grid tie solar power system installed on a commercial building can supply a portion of the power needed to run the site. Using solar energy reduces dependency on the electric utility, reduces greenhouse gases and lowers monthly power bills. During the day, electricity generated by the solar power system is fed into the building, offsetting the amount of power being drawn from the grid. Any excess power is fed back to the electric utility to be used by someone else, resulting in a power credit. This concept is known as net metering. In Ontario, the Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program (RESOP) allows owners of grid tie solar power systems to sell all of their renewable energy to the Ontario Power Authority over a 20 year term.
Grid tie solar power systems with some form of net metering program are the fastest growing segment of the solar market worldwide. With net metering programs now approved in most of the U.S. states and huge installation programs in Germany and Japan, thousands of business and homeowners are now experiencing the benefits of solar electricity.
