Hershey Centre in Mississauga Selects Carmanah Grid Tie Solar Power System

Tuesday, July 17, 2007

Carmanah's Solar Power Systems Group has received an order from the City of Mississauga for a turnkey 25kW grid tie solar power system to be installed on the roof of Rink #3 at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario in September, 2007.

The Hershey Centre is a state-of-the-art sports and entertainment facility that has been home to world-class sporting events since 1988. Carmanah was selected to design, project manage and install the solar power system at the Hershey Centre because of its reputation and ability to deliver high-quality, large-scale commercial grid tie solar-power systems in Canada. The City of Mississauga and Enersource Mississauga Hydro, both strong supporters of renewable energy projects, co-funded this project.

This particular system features an array of 144 SHARP 175 watt solar modules, as well as a real-time data acquisition system that features web-based monitoring technology to enable users to view the Hershey Centre's renewable energy generation in real time.

About Carmanahs Grid Tie Solar Power Systems

When connected to the electrical grid, a grid tie solar power system installed on a commercial building can supply a portion of the power needed to run the site. Using solar energy reduces dependency on the electric utility and lowers monthly power bills. During the day, electricity generated by the solar power system is fed into the building, offsetting the amount of power being drawn from the grid. Any excess power is fed back to the electric utility to be used by someone else, resulting in a power credit. This concept is known as net metering.

Grid tie solar power systems with some form of net metering program are the fastest growing segment of the solar market worldwide. With net metering programs now approved in most of the U.S. states and huge installation programs in Germany and Japan, thousands of business and homeowners are now experiencing the benefits of solar electricity.
