Even the humble bus stop is benefitting from Canadian inventiveness. Carmanah Technologies in Victoria is lighting up bus stops and shelters in the U.S. and England with its i-STOP and i-SHELTER-solar-powered systems that improve passenger security at night by lighting up the pole or shelter with LED lights. These award-winning designs, which feature illuminated bus schedules, also minimize rider "pass-by" by flashing a beacon that alerts approaching buses to stop.

"All of this is powered by a solar panel, so there's no cable and no external source of power," says Roschlau `President and CEO of the Canadian Urban Transit Association`. "It's a really ingenious application of solar technology."
