June 24, 2006  -

Carmanah is pleased to announce that it is a proud technology supplier for the CanaTREK: “The Summits of Canada” Expedition. Supported by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, this historic Canadian adventure will take place in 2006 to put the first Canadian Team on the highest point of Canada’s thirteen provinces and territories.

The Expedition will travel to each Provincial and Territorial highpoint, from Queens County in Prince Edward Island to Nunavut’s Ellesmere Island, from the Mackenzie River in the Northwest Territories and its un-named summit, to the top of Canada in the Yukon. Traveling through ten Provincial and National Parks, three of which are designated World Heritage Sites, the Expedition will show Canadians and the world our beautiful country from sea-to-sea-to-sea. To reach all thirteen summits the Expedition will drive over 12,000 kilometres, canoe 400 kilometres, fly in and land on two glaciers, land on the Ice Cap, walk, snow shoe, ski, bike, and climb over 90,000 vertical feet – three times the height of Mount Everest.

Blessed with dramatic scenery and trips from one-day hikes to month long assaults, the thirteen provincial and territorial highpoints represent a modern day adventure. The journey and summits range from beautiful, remote and dangerous settings to gentle hikes waiting to be shared with Canadians and the world.

The Expedition has eight goals in its quest:

  1. To make Canada better known to Canadians and the world;
  2. To put the first Canadians on top of the highpoint of every province and territory;
  3. To foster a healthier Canada by encouraging children and adults to be more physically active;
  4. To deliver the first live television broadcast from the top of Canada, “Live from Logan”;
  5. To scientifically measure the height of Mount Logan, Fairweather and the Ishpatina Ridge;
  6. To offer educational learning opportunities to teachers and students;
  7. To capture and share the human and geographical stories through photograph and film;
  8. To promote environmentally friendly “Leave No Trace Principles”.

Carmanah has provided the Expedition team with the solar chargers necessary to keep their electrical equipment functional for the duration of the adventure.
