RRFBs VS. Circular Crosswalk Beacons

While circular flashing beacons at crosswalks have been a traditional go-to solution for increasing pedestrian visibility, how do they stack up to the newer rectangular rapid flashing beacons? They both have a positive effect on getting drivers to yield, but RRFBs excel beyond standard circular flashers because of two key differences: their rectangular shape and rapid-flashing pattern. The rectangular-shaped lights resemble emergency vehicle lights, and the rapid wig-wag plus simultaneous (WW+S) flash pattern is jarring and highly visible in all roadway conditions. Studies have backed up this innovative LED application, showing driver yield rates of 73-96% at RRFB-equipped crosswalks.
