Today Carmanah Traffic announced Bridgeway Island Elementary School, in West Sacramento, CA, as the winning entry in the Be a Beacon Contest. Carmanah is excited to provide an R920 Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) system to improve pedestrian access and safety at one of their school crosswalks.

Chosen from five deserving elementary school entries, Bridgeway Island Elementary received overwhelming support on social media from the community and local organizations including Walk Sacramento. who is dedicated to improving pedestrian safety throughout the region. Today the busy crosswalk has visibility challenges that are common around school zones, including a student drop-off and pick up area. The location was an ideal spot a RRFB System and will allow significant improvement to pedestrian safety for the school’s students and local community.

Other Top Entries

Four other elementary schools were entered in the contest and received notable community support for improving school crossings. Carmanah Traffic would like to thank these schools for their tremendous efforts and for raising awareness of pedestrian safety and Safe Routes to School programs in their communities.

Other top entries were received from:

  • Westfield Village Elementary – West Sacramento, California
  • Faison Elementary School – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  • Paxson Elementary – Missoula, Montana
  • Cotswold IB World School – Charlotte, North Carolina

“We were impressed by the activities these five schools have implemented to increase walking and riding to school. All of the Be a Beacon entries received incredible support from teachers, citizens, media and community organizations,” remarked Greg Miller, Managing Director for Carmanah Traffic.

“The goal of this contest was to not only recognize the efforts being made by students to increase walking and cycling to school, but to address some of the barriers that exist with students crossing busy roads en route to school. We are pleased with the engagement from PTOs/PTAs and Safe Route to Schools organizations in this contest. We hope we have raised awareness to cost-effective options for more accessible pedestrian facilities.”

The Be a Beacon Contest

Participants in the Be a Beacon Contest entered to win a Carmanah R920 Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon system for a crosswalk near their school. The contest required participants to show how their school promotes active transportation in the community and which school crosswalk they wanted to improve. Participants were encouraged to gain social media activity on their submission through likes, comments, shares, and tweets for higher ranking.

Participants entered five different elementary schools from across the United States. Entries were posted to the Carmanah Traffic Facebook wall where community members could support their crosswalk locations by liking, commenting on, sharing, or tweeting about their favorite entry. The contest ran from September 2 to December 6, 2013.
