Solar lighting takes center stage in Newburgh, New York

Newburgh, New York, is a city about 60 miles north of New York City, along the Hudson River. Here, the non-profit organization Safe Harbors of the Hudson developed a mixed-use housing and arts redevelopment project out of a deteriorating hotel, providing not only a home but also services for 128 residents, including the formerly homeless, veterans, and those living with mental illness and physical disabilities. Once this was established, the group purchased the long-vacant lot next door and transformed it into an accessible urban park.

Three of Sol’s solar lights brighten up the salsa nights, concerts, and other community events that take place in Safe Harbors Green. One Nature, LLC, the landscape designer and project manager, recommended Sol’s products for the job. while Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh donated the labor and installation.

“The Safe Harbors Green has transformed a blighted corner of our community into a beautiful park. Having solar lighting, all-natural plantings, rainwater gardens, and full ADA accessibility was the responsible, sustainable, and environmentally sensitive way to grow our project.” – Lisa Silverstone, Executive Director of Safe Harbors of the Hudson
