The US Army will be installing 520 Carmanah solar-powered Aviation Lights for permanent airfield lighting at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan to be used for Air Force and Army operations. Model 702 units will be used for runway edge lighting, threshold lighting and obstruction lighting while Model 601 units will be used for taxiway edge lighting, apron edge lighting and construction lighting.
The Carmanah lights will be installed during the month of November and will be used to land C-130 carrier planes, fighter jets and helicopters. Carmanah’s use of light emitting diode technology allows the pilots to fly with night vision goggles (NVGs), creating a safe and optimal visual guidance path in comparison to incandescent light fixtures, which create a blooming or even blinding effect under NVG use. This installation marks the first air base to install Carmanah Aviation lights in the country of Afghanistan. It is estimated that the installation costs are approximately 1/10th the price of a conventionally-powered system.
