A busy port in northern Portugal has installed Carmanah 702-GPS solar powered marine lanterns to aid mariners in identifying the navigable channel in and out of the port. Provided by Carmanah’s authorized Portugese distributer Ahlers Lindley, Carmanah’s 702-GPS lanterns were installed on a series of navigational buoys along the access channel to the Port of Viana do Castelo.
Located along the estuary of the River Lima, the port features a narrow channel and strong estuary currents. Accommodating a mix of cargo and commercial vessel traffic, the channel’s challenging environment emphasizes the need for reliable channel marking.
The superior reliability and durability of Carmanah marine lanterns were key factors in the decision to use the company’s technology. Carmanah solar marine lanterns are designed to operate maintenance free for up to five years and are field-proven to withstand extreme environmental conditions.
Incorporating GPS technology, Carmanah 702-GPS marine lanterns offer port authorities unparalleled flexibility. Incorporating 250 flash codes, the solar marine lanterns can be programmed to flash in synchronization. Lanterns on each channel marker leading into the Port of Viano do Castelo have been programmed to flash together. Providing visual guidance from up to three nautical miles away, Carmanah’s lanterns offer a significant safety improvement for mariners navigating the difficult channel in low visibility and night conditions.
The lights have received positive feedback from port officials who service and maintain the lanterns and the vessel pilots and commercial mariners who depend on them.
