Carmanah has been contracted by the US Air Force to supply an additional 250 units of its Model 601 taxiway lights. These units will be installed at the Ali Air Base, formerly known as the Tallil Air Base, in Iraq.
The Ali Air Base has had excellent success with Carmanah’s solar LED technology. The base was the first base in Iraq to deploy Carmanah’s solar-powered LED runway lights in the Spring of 2003, and currently there are more than 800 units installed.
The Ali Air Base is situated near the city of An Nasiriyah in south central Iraq and is the main airfield in southern Iraq for Iraqi, Coalition and U.S. Defense operations. Renewable energy sources play an important role at this base, as electrical infrastructure is either unreliable or non-existent.
All Carmanah aviation lights are Night Vision Goggle (NVG) compatible, eliminating the need for non-emitting lighting technologies such as retro-reflective markers. As Carmanah’s lights are quick to deploy and require no infrastructure or ongoing external energy to operate, the US Air Force and other Department of Defense departments have been able to save millions of dollars in up-front capital, labor and operating costs at various air bases throughout the Middle East.
