Carmanah is pleased to announce that its self-contained, solar-powered LED marine navigation lights have won a 2004 Canadian Safe Boating Award (CASBA) for “Best New Marine Safety Product” from the Canadian Safe Boating Council.

Carmanah received the honour at the 7th Annual CASBA awards gala on January 16, 2005, at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel. The ceremony coincided with the opening weekend of the Toronto International Boat Show, a celebration of Canada’s $11.5 billion recreational boating industry, January 15 – 23, 2005.

CASBA honours significant contributions to safe boating, the environment and product innovation. “These awards celebrate the best and the brightest people, organizations, promotions and products in the Canadian boating industry,” said Mike Bennett, Chair of the CASBA.

Carmanah CEO Art Aylesworth stated: “We are proud to be recognized for our products’ contribution to improved marine safety in Canada. We use the latest solar and LED technology to make marine lights that are reliable, long lasting and inexpensive. The bottom line is increased safety through more comprehensive and reliable navigation systems.”

Carmanah’s cost-saving solar-powered LED lights made it possible for the Canadian Coast Guard to complete the world’s first fully illuminated marine navigation system in 2002, comprising 1,650 lighted buoys along the 23,000-kilometre coast of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Because Carmanah lights require zero maintenance during their five-year lifespan-none of the regular battery or bulb changes of conventional lights-they free up Coast Guard resources for other important tasks such as environmental protection and search and rescue.

Carmanah’s lights were independently nominated for the CASBA and selected by a panel of six judges that included representatives from the Canadian Hydrographic Service, Ontario Provincial Police Traffic & Marine Safety, Transport Canada Office of Boating Safety, Ontario Marine Operators Association and the Lifesaving Society.
