Carmanah Technologies, a Canadian company with a sales office and warehouse in Scotts Valley, has installed 62 solar-powered LED flashing beacons in 31 school zones in Los Angeles County to improve safety.

The beacons – part of the state’s Safe Routes to School program – warn motorists of reduced speed limits.

Carmanah cites several benefits of its solar-powered flashers over traditional hard-wired systems. They charge in all weather conditions. They work on a calendar-based schedule, and they can be mounted on signposts, avoiding the need for trenching and special permits.

The company’s products also are in use at airports and bus shelters.

Carmanah added the Scotts Valley office with the purchase of SPS Energy Solutions in July.
