Solar technology is both the medium and the message in an eye-catching billboard display developed by Vancouver-based Knight Signs.
A new illuminated billboard on Vancouver’s Expo Boulevard is powered by Carmanah’s solar power technology and the solar panel array actually forms part of the billboard’s innovative messaging.
Carmanah’s Power Systems Group provided the 160-watt solar power technology to Knight Signs as a technology partner in the project. The sign, displaying six solar modules powering an illuminated Vancouver City Savings Credit Union (Vancity) logo, conveys the organization’s commitment to green building practices.
Since 2004, Vancity, Canada’s largest Credit Union, has been involved with the Green Building Grant Program which it established with the Real Estate Foundation of British Columbia. The grant program is committed to minimizing the impacts of climate change and improving sustainable land-use practices by supporting green building initiatives in B.C. The goal of the program is to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions.
As an alternative to hard-wired systems, Carmanah’s solar power technology significantly reduces installation costs and eliminates expensive electrical permits, maintenance charges and ongoing electricity bills. This particular system’s enclosure (housing rechargeable batteries and automated power management equipment) is pole mounted behind the sign.
Thousands of Carmanah solar power systems have been deployed worldwide over the past 15 years. Carmanah solar power systems are custom designed and then shipped as turnkey, easy-to-assemble kits that can be installed quickly with minimal technical expertise.
