Omnitrans, San Bernardino, CA, is installing twenty I-Stop illuminated transit stops from Carmanah Technologies, Victoria, BC, in a test project.

The devices which are powered by batteries charged by the sun offer three different features: a flashing light atop the pole to catch drivers’ attention, a light to illuminate the area surrounding a bus stop, and a backlit schedule holder. Waiting customers can activate the lights by pressing on three buttons attached to the pole.

Omnitrans says the devices are designed to allow the agency to enhance security for passengers waiting for the buses at night and convenience so riders can minimize the chance of being passed by in the dark.
