Used to collect data on traffic flow and efficiency, potential safety concerns, and infrastructure improvements, wireless vehicle detection systems are an important component of effective traffic management. Vehicle detection systems provide real time measurements of statistics such as traffic flow, volume and speed. These important numbers are often used for the statistical analysis that governs roadway upgrades and infrastructure improvements.
This particular vehicle detection system uses wireless sensors and interfaces to gather, organize, analyze, and process parking information from off-street parking facilities, and then distributes the information to drivers and local organizations in a convenient, easy-to-use manner.
Carmanah’s stand alone solar power systems were chosen for this particular application due to their ease of installation and low cost operation. With no trenching, cabling or wiring required, Carmanah’s solar power systems avoid extensive power start and installation permits required by conventional hardwired methods. This allows wireless vehicle detection systems to be placed in any location without the hassle of extensive installation procedures.

This pilot project is expected to result in additional wireless vehicle detection systems being powered by Carmanah’s stand alone solar power technology.
