TransLink has begun testing 17 new solar-powered bus stops at a cost of $1,500 each. Regular bus stops cost $100 to $200 depending on whether they’re new or attached to existing posts. The new bus stops — called i-STOP — are in use in 60 transit systems in North America. They are produced by B.C. company Carmanah Technology. They use solar power to illuminate the stops with light-emitting diodes and have a flashing beacon that can be activated by a passenger to call a bus.
