Carmanah has received a number of orders from the US Coast Guard (“USCG”) for hundreds of its 700 Series solar-powered LED marine navigation lights in anticipation of the 2006 hurricane season.

Following hurricane Katrina last year, Carmanah had to divert all of its inventory and production to meet the immediate demand for over 500 of its solar-powered LED marine, railway and aviation lights. Most of the orders were from the USCG on the Gulf Coast of the United States.

“We were on a very tight timeline after Katrina. The USCG phoned one morning after the hurricane with a large order that they needed shipped the same day. From then on the orders just kept rolling in,” said Mimi Drabit, the coast guard liaison for Carmanah’s Marine Lighting Division.

In the event of a storm this year, the USCG will have lights in place and ready to deploy in hurricane preparedness boxes at strategic locations.

Carmanah has recently delivered 200 lights to the Gulf Coast where 50 lights each will go to Corpus Cristi, TX; Mobile, AL; Metairie, LA; and Galveston, TX. An additional order of lights for the East Coast will go to Long Beach, NC; Baltimore, MD; and Portsmouth, VA.

“We are pleased that our lights proved to be valuable during last year’s post-hurricane Katrina rebuilding and we are proud to be a part of the effort to streamline the emergency response to future storms,” stated Carmanah’s CEO, Art Aylesworth.

Carmanah lights are ideal for emergency applications because they are solar-powered and fully self-contained. They can be installed anywhere in minutes, operate reliably for years without need of external electrical infrastructure, and are virtually indestructible. For example, on September 5, 2003, a Carmanah light mounted on a buoy offshore of Bermuda successfully weathered hurricane Fabian, a Category 3 hurricane.

The North Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 and peaks from August through October. U.S. agencies have been emphasizing preparedness as the National Hurricane Center predicts an “above normal” season for 2006 with eight to ten hurricanes, including up to six “major” hurricanes of Category 3 strength or higher.
