Carmanah Technologies Inc. on Apr. 11 announced that it has received $279,000 of contracts to supply four U.S. transportation authorities and municipalities on the West Coast with i-SHELTER™ solar light-emitting diode (LED) shelter lighting systems and i-STOP™ solar LED transit stops.

Carmanah’s i-SHELTER™ is a self-contained shelter lighting system that harnesses the sun’s energy to power high-intensity LEDs. The i-SHELTER™ requires no external electrical source, trenching, cabling or power permits. The i-STOP is a pole-mounted solar LED transit stop that is activated by illuminated buttons to provide up to three types of transit stop illumination: an edge-lit schedule display; an overhead security light that remains on for five minutes to enhance safety for waiting transit passengers; and a patented flashing beacon designed to notify an oncoming bus that a passenger is waiting to board.

The first contract – with Clark County Public Transportation Benefit Area (C-TRAN), Vancouver, Wash. – is for a minimum of 90 i-STOP™ transit stops. The contract has been approved for up to $188,000 in orders over its one-year term. The additional contracts are with three cities within the Los Angeles metropolitan area, totaling $91,000 and comprising 25 i-SHELTER™ units and 30 i-STOP™ units. www.transitlights.com.
