Vancouver, British Columbia – April 26, 2002 – Carmanah Technologies Corporation (CMH – TSX Venture Exchange), announced today that the company has already received $200,000 in orders for its new solar-powered LED (light emitting diode) transportation products from Solagen Ltd., its joint venture partner in the United Kingdom.
“The transportation and transit markets in the U.K. represent a huge opportunity for Carmanah and Solagen,” states Art Aylesworth, Carmanah’s CEO. Each year, England alone spends over £200 million on maintenance, public lighting and safety for its share of Great Britain’s 390,000-kilometer road system. Carmanah’s proven solar-powered LED technology adapts well to a range of products for this market — low cost, low maintenance and long lasting with autonomous operation.
Solagen is exclusively marketing products jointly developed with Carmanah, and will sell direct into the U.K.’s local government Traffic and Transportation sector, as well as to highway contractors, schools and bus operators. Solagen’s orders to-date, which will be filled by the end of March, are for solar-powered LED school crossing flashers and bi-directional road hazard marker posts.
“We are increasing our sales force significantly to cope with the demand,” states Solagen Director David Barraclough. Solagen was originally attracted to Carmanah because of the company’s depth of intellectual property and the strength of its patents.
The European market will get a closer look at all of Carmanah’s new solar-powered LED products for the transportation industry at the InterTraffic trade show in Amsterdam in April, 2002.
