Carmanah has received an order from Pierce Transit of Lakewood, WA, for 43 units of its fully self-contained, solar-powered i-STOP® solar LED illuminated bus stop and 20 units of its i-SHELTER™ solar-powered LED shelter lighting systems.
Pierce Transit, located in the City of Lakewood, WA, is the agency responsible for the public transit in the Pierce County region, which consists of 24 cities and towns with a population of approximately 756,000 residents. Pierce Transit maintains 3,300 bus stops, 425 covered bus shelters and a fleet of over 240 buses that accommodate over 14 million passengers annually. Pierce Transit works hard to continuously improve the transit experience for its riders and is a strong supporter of natural gas, solar-power, and other “green” technologies.
This recent transit product order from Pierce Transit follows on the previous success of over 300 Carmanah i-SIGNAL™ Solar-Powered Transit Signal Beacon deployments between 2003 to 2005. The agency has chosen to move from the simple i-SIGNAL™ to a two feature i-STOP® which includes the i-SIGNAL™ as well as user-activated LED security down lighting to enhance visibility and safety at the bus stop.
About the i-STOP® Solar-Powered LED Transit Stop
Carmanah’s proprietary i-STOP® bus stop is a compact, completely self-contained, solar-powered LED bus stop lighting system that installs onto most standard bus stop poles. The i-STOP® unit is entirely modular, enabling transit authorities to choose one or more of the following LED-based lighting features:
- Security area lighting to provide a safer environment for waiting passengers. This down lighting also allows passengers to be more visible to bus operators;
- An edge-lit illuminated schedule with low-profile, uniform illumination that enables passengers to readily view bus route information from dusk to dawn;
- Carmanah’s patented i-SIGNAL™ bus signaling device – a flashing beacon that notifies an oncoming bus that a stop is required. This beacon is visible up to a 1/4 mile in the day, and 1 mile in the dark.
All features are user-activated via ADA-compliant, self-illuminating buttons, including Braille labels with easy-to-read tactile lettering. Utilizing Carmanah’s award-winning, patented solar-powered LED technology, the i-STOP® bus stop lighting system can be installed quickly and cost-effectively with no trenching, wiring, traffic disruption or site remediation.
