Carmanah’s Transit Lighting Division has received an order from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) to deliver 245 of its i-STOP® solar-powered LED bus stop lighting systems. This order follows the successful rollout of thousands of stops with other local agencies in southern California.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) is unique among the nation’s transportation agencies. It serves as transportation planner and coordinator, designer, builder and operator for one of the country’s largest, most populous counties. With over 18,500 stops, Metro also was recently named America’s Outstanding Transportation System by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA).

Carmanah’s i-STOP® solar-powered LED bus stops provide a safer environment for waiting passengers and also ensure they are more visible to bus drivers. With an easy installation requiring no trenching, cabling or site remediation, the i-STOP® bus stops provided significant cost savings up front compared with traditional hard-wired systems. In addition, Metro can expect Carmanah’s i-STOP® solar-powered LED bus stops to operate for up to five years without any scheduled maintenance.

About STOP® Bus Stop Lighting

Carmanah’s proprietary i-STOP® bus stop is a compact, completely self-contained, solar-powered LED bus stop lighting system that installs onto most standard bus stop poles. The i-STOP® unit is entirely modular, enabling transit authorities to choose one or more of the following LED-based lighting features:

  • UL and NCRP 350 approvals;
  • Security area lighting to provide a safer environment for waiting passengers. This down lighting also allows passengers to be more visible to bus operators;
  • An edge-lit illuminated schedule with low-profile, uniform illumination that enables passengers to readily view bus route information from dusk to dawn;
  • Carmanah’s patented i-SIGNAL™ bus signaling device – a flashing beacon that notifies an oncoming bus that a stop is required. This beacon is visible up to a 1/4 mile in the day, and 1 mile in the dark.

All features are user-activated via ADA-compliant, self-illuminating buttons, including Braille labels with easy-to-read tactile lettering. Utilizing Carmanah’s award-winning, patented solar-powered LED technology, the i-STOP® bus stop lighting system can be installed quickly and cost-effectively with no trenching, wiring, traffic disruption or site remediation.
