Vancouver, British Columbia – April 26, 2002 – Carmanah Technologies Corporation (CMH – TSX Venture Exchange) received positive feedback for its navigation lanterns at a marine industry conference held in March, 2002, in Sydney, Australia. Attendees at the XVth Conference of the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) included coast guards and navigation authorities from around the world.

“We were extremely pleased with how positively many of these authorities spoke to our products,” said Carmanah CEO Art Aylesworth. “The excellent reception at this conference demonstrates that Carmanah is truly a world leader in short range marine lighting (1 to 3 nautical miles).”

A number of conference papers referred to Carmanah’s marine lanterns. Dr. Jean-Pierre Wallard of the French government’s Centre for Maritime and River Technical Studies announced that Carmanah Models 601 and 701 have the lowest costs of acquisition, installation and operation for up to 3 years. And the Model 601 also had the lowest cost of operation over 6-year and 10-year intervals for a lantern with a 2 nautical mile range.

Jon Grasson of the U.S. Coast Guard Ocean Engineering Division reported that Carmanah’s solar-powered LED marine lanterns “are performing satisfactorily and are well received by servicing personnel and mariners.” He also stated that “their 2 nautical mile range, 6-year rated life and user programmable flash rhythms make it an ideal signal for discrepancy buoys.”

The U.S. Coast Guard began testing LED lighting in 2000 in an initiative to improve reliability and lower the maintenance costs of navigational aids. The U.S. Coast Guard maintains 50,000 navigational aids and regulates an additional 50,000 private aids to navigation in U.S. waters. It plans to spend $590 million on navigational aids in 2002.
