Topsfield, Massachusetts, Improves Trail Crossing Safety with RRFBs

March 1, 2019

The Topsfield Rail Trail Committee, who built the Topsfield Linear Common Trail in Topsfield, MA, installed rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs) to improve safety at a midblock crosswalk where the trail meets the road. They learned about RRFBs and their proven track record of increasing driver yield rates at crossings. Carmanah’s R920 RRFB was selected as the most cost-effective option, thanks to Carmanah’s expertise in designing energy-efficient systems, even for Northern regions.

The R920 RRFBs shown here mounted on 2″ telespar sign posts were installed at the crossing. These units were installed by volunteers who were surprised how easy the RRFB systems are to install. The Topsfield Rail Trail Committee was also pleased with the savings from hiring volunteers instead of contractors for the installation.
