The Mount Joy Community Centre, located in Markham, Ontario received a 285 kW solar array on their rooftop as part of the Feed-In tariff program.  Carmanah was the Engineer, Procure and Construct (EPC) service provider for the solar system, and worked with PowerStream Solar on another Markham rooftop, the Thornhill Community Centre.

The Mount Joy facility's surface presented a number of design challenges including multiple roofs with varied slopes, an irregularly corrugated metal surface and limited reserve structural capacity for the PV system. Carmanah’s engineering team collaborated with Schletter Canada Inc. to propose an innovative design for the building’s requirements. Carmanah and Schletter adapted a standard racking product that would minimize the necessity for physically anchoring the solar generating array, allowing for the bulk of the system to be ballasted.

The installation features Heliene PV modules, commercial inverters locally manufactured in Ontario by Advanced Energy and a remote monitoring system that will report real-time solar generation.

The clean, carbon-free power generated from this system will offset the equivalent of 38,000 litres of gasoline annually.
