Carmanah’s Roadway Division has supplied the City of Chula, California, two units of its newly released R820C solar-powered LED pedestrian crosswalk beacons. These units are now installed at an elementary school crosswalk in Chula Vista, CA.

The R820C is the most compact, energy-efficient and cost-effective solar LED pedestrian crosswalk beacon in the world. With no trenching, cabling, grid power hookup, or disruption to traffic flow, the R820C installs for a fraction of the cost of traditional hardwired systems; in fact, with minimal technical expertise, this unit can be installed in minutes onto any existing signpost. Once in place, the R820C improves driver awareness of pedestrians at uncontrolled crosswalks.

Chula Vista, CA, located just outside San Diego and minutes from the U.S.-Mexican border, is home to 200,000 residents and 43 elementary schools. Recently, a pedestrian incident occurred at one of the elementary schools, prompting the City to seek an immediate solution to improve pedestrian safety at the location. The City of Chula Vista chose a Carmanah R820C pedestrian crosswalk beacon because the system can be installed immediately. In comparison, a hard-wired system would have required that the project go through the proposal and bid process, which would have significantly delayed the city’s response time.

About the R820C Solar LED Pedestrian Crosswalk Beacon

The R820C builds upon the established reputation and field-proven capabilities of Carmanah’s self-contained R820 solar flashing beacon, but is smaller, lighter, more energy efficient and available at a lower cost. Like its predecessor, the R820C utilizes Carmanah’s patented MICROSOURCE™ Energy Management System to automatically adjust to prevailing solar conditions for reliable year-round operation under all weather conditions.

Drawing on Carmanah’s innovative new compact control module or “solar engine,” the R820C can be mounted high above the sidewalk, out of the path of pedestrians and out of the reach of vandals.

Significant long-term cost savings are also achieved by the R820C, as it requires no external grid power. Other key operational benefits included no bulbs to replace for the life of the unit, as well as no scheduled maintenance or servicing for up to 5 years, at which point only the battery pack may need exchanging.

The R820C is the only self-contained, solar LED pedestrian crosswalk beacon that uses ITE compliant LED modules and meets all MUTCD requirements for flashing beacons.

Carmanah manufactures compact solar flashing beacons for crosswalks, school zones, and 24-hour applications, and LED illuminated street-name signs and regulatory signs. More than 250,000 installations worldwide attest to the reliability and operational benefits of Carmanah’s products.
