Lights Ahoy!

The aftermath of Sept. 11 has also raised the profile of Victoria-based Carmanah Technologies Inc. It landed six new contracts for its solar-powered lanterns, including a $35,000 order for the U.S. navy. The navy needs the lights to mark floating barricades deployed around ships at anchor, a requirement that grew in urgency after the bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen last year, as well as the World Trade Center attack.

A subsidiary of Canada's Carmanah Technologies is supplying Model 601 solar powered LED (light emitting diode) lanterns to the Navy for marking anti-terrorism nets. Carmanah's marine lanterns will be used on a floating barrier to protect ships while in port.

LED Manufacturer Lights Up the World from Vancouver-Area Plant

Carmanah Technologies Inc. is a small company located in a little city on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, but size and location haven't prevented it from becoming a major player in the world-wide market for solar-powered LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights.    Although it was founded just a few years ago, in 1996, the 32-employee company in the Victoria suburb of Esquimalt has already carved out for itself a piece of the global marine market for LED lighting products.

Solar Powered LED Lanterns

Solar-powered light emitting diode lanterns for marking anti-terrorism nets have been shipped by the Canadian company, Carmanah Technologies, to the U.S. Navy. The first order of US$22,000 will be used on a floating barrier to protect ships in port. The Model 601 LED lantern provide five years of operation without battery or bulb replacement or servicing, are self-cleaning and waterproof with a polycarbonate/polymer housing..

The U.S. Navy took delivery last week of several dozen low power marker lights designed and built by a Victoria company, to protect its warships both in port and in hostile waters. After the attack on the USS Cole in Yemen, the navy started looking for ways to create restricted no-traffic zones around its warships.

Carmanah is currently shipping a first order valued at US $22,000 to Norfolk, Virginia. According to Carmanah, its marine lanterns will be used on a floating barrier to protect ships while in port.

Carmanah Installs Lights in Vietnam

BUSINESS: Carmanah Technologies has installed more than 400 units of its Model 601 solar navigation lights in Ha Long Bay and Hai Phong Harbour of Northern Vietnam. The installation is the result of a contract awarded to Carmanah July 12 by the Vietnam Inland Waterway Administration, part of Vietnam's initial efforts to upgrade the illumination of its waterways. "Significant opportunities remain for these types of modernization projects in the region," said Carmanah CEO Art Aylesworth.
