We are pleased to announce that Carmanah’s AC-powered WW400 Vehicle Detection, Warning and Alert System has completed testing at the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) test track and can now be found on FDOT’s Approved Product List (APL). It joins a slate of other trusted Carmanah products, including our solar-powered version of the WW400 system, which was approved in May.

Over the course of several months, the WW400 was subjected to rigorous testing by both FDOT and third-party experts to ensure it met—or exceeded—federal and state requirements. This included:

  • A 200-lap test, where the system provided a detection accuracy of 100% with zero missed detections or false positives (laps were performed during the day, at night, and in the rain to ensure reliability in various conditions)
  • A communication test, which proved the system could communicate directly with FDOT’s SunGuide software through a server-based system as well as directly with the detector pole
  • A high temperature test, which confirmed all components could operate at elevated temperatures for an extended period

Earning FDOT approval not only means that engineers in Florida can specify the WW400 on federal and state-funded projects, but that transportation professionals across North America can feel confident in their selection of the WW400 as a safe, reliable, and efficient wrong-way driving countermeasure.

What is the WW400?

The WW400 is Carmanah’s most advanced wrong-way driving (WWD) system. Designed for problematic ramps with high numbers of wrong-way driving incidents, it uses radar to detect drivers traveling in the wrong direction, warn them of their mistake using high-intensity flashing lights, and sends alerts to local traffic management centers (TMCs).

What makes the WW400 so effective?

Unlike similar systems, the WW400 uses not one but two types of technology for vehicle detection: radar and high-definition cameras. This ensures a greater degree of detection accuracy, with no false positives. Additionally, the LEDs the system uses have the highest output in the industry, which is crucial when things like driver distraction and intoxication are at play.

What other solutions are available?

The WW400 is part of a line of WWD products designed to meet agencies’ diverse needs. You can learn more about all of our products here.
