R920-F (Gen 3)
Bright, 30w solar-powered rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB) for busy crosswalks
MUTCD Compliant Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon Supports Multiple Options
The Carmanah R920-F increases driver yield rates in high-traffic locations. User-activated, this solar-powered flashing beacon improves yielding compliance at mid-block crosswalks and more. With a highly visible, irregular flash pattern, the RRFB allows pedestrians and cyclists to be seen day or night, no matter what the weather conditions.
The solar panel, batteries and energy management system are contained in one, compact unit, making the R920-F an easy-to-install, self-contained solution. Its compact design and included universal mounting makes it easy to mount to many different pole shapes and sizes—it can even be retrofitted onto existing crosswalk signage to enhance an existing marked crosswalk. Despite its small form factor, the R920-F RRFB still packs high performance and brightness thanks to efficient energy management and a low power draw. It can operate reliably in northern locations where average solar-powered RRFBs would not be sustainable and would require frequent, unnecessary battery replacements.
The R920-F RRFB can also be equipped with a variety of safety enhancements, including accessible pedestrian signals (APS) to meet full ADA compliance, passive detection sensors to detect incoming pedestrians, overhead lighting to improve nighttime visibility, remote connectivity for data monitoring and reducing site visits, and more. Learn more about these safety enhancements in the Options section. The R920-F requires no trenching, cabling, or in-ground wiring, and it’s built to last: durable and dependable, this product comes with a 5-year warranty for peace of mind.
MUTCD 11th Edition Compliance
The 11th Edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), which was released on December 19, 2023, incorporates RRFBs, marking a milestone for traffic control and pedestrian safety. RRFBs are approved for use in the United States, as well as other regions including Canada and overseas.
Three reasons to choose this solar-powered RRFB:
- 30-watt solar engine operates at high intensities for a greater range of project applications
- Easy to mount or retrofit onto a range of square and round poles
- Can be upgraded to include passive activation sensors, audible pushbutton stations, and remote monitoring
Product Options and Add-Ons
- Single or Dual Directional Light Bars
- Added LED Emhanced Signs
- ADA, PROWAG and MUTCD Compliant Pedestrian Activation
- Overhead Lighting for Crosswalks
Light Bar Configuration
The R920-F supports a single or dual-directional light bar setup.

LED Enhanced Signs
Along with the standard light bars, you can add an LED Enhanced Sign to the R920-F to further strengthen the message to drivers. These flashing signs can also supplement advance pedestrian warning signs to warn drivers a pedestrian has activated the RRFB crossing.
ADA, PROWAG and MUTCD Compliant Pedestrian Activation
Our MX crosswalk systems use push buttons and activation methods that are compliant to ADA, PROWAG and MUTCD standards and guidelines. The R920-F supports standard push buttons with two-tone audible confirmation and visual LED confirmation, accessible pedestrian signal (APS) push buttons with locator tone and customizable voice messages. APS push buttons with non-contact operation and passive activation sensors are also supported, allowing pedestrians to activate a crosswalk without pressing a button.

Overhead Lighting for Crosswalks
While many mid-block crosswalks are in locations with traditional street lighting, it’s typically not enough to adequately illuminate a pedestrian or light the entire crosswalk area. Purpose-built, pedestrian-scale lighting like Carmanah’s overhead lighting systems integrate seamlessly with our RRFBs and crosswalk systems, providing bright, directional, and uniform light that allows drivers to detect pedestrians at a distance and adjust their speed accordingly. Studies have found that adding street lighting can reduce nighttime crashes by 50% and reduce fatal crashes by 43%.
We put solar to work™
Whether your project application is a crosswalk, school zone, or 24-hour sign marking, we can run a comprehensive site assessment to confirm the best solar-powered flashing beacon for your project. We run a field-proven software simulation to create a Solar Power Report™ to show you how we did it. Best of all? It’s free, and we can have it ready in 24 hours.
